We are excited to see the momentum continuing the build for zero waste in our community! Here are some of the latest updates:

  • Alachua County and the City of Gainesville are partnering on the zero waste initiative! They have developed a WEBSITE which includes the latest information and events. One of the first items on their agenda is to develop a zero waste strategic plan and complete a waste composition study. The timeline to complete both is the spring of 2019.
  • The City of Gainesville has included in their proposed budget to hire a Sustainability Manager. Having dedicated staff to work on the zero waste initiative is great, and we are happy to see the City making a commitment to our environment.

Once the strategic plan is complete, Zero Waste Gainesville will be reviewing and basing our advocacy work on the plan recommendations. Stay tuned for ways to get involved!

Zero Waste Gainesville serves on the Alachua County NAACP Environmental & Climate Justice Committee. We recognize that environmental injustice, including the proliferation of climate change, has a disproportionate impact on communities of color and low income communities in the United States and around the world. The committee was created to support, educate, and advocate for a clean and healthy environment for all.
